I live in Washington DC. I studied photography during my last year in college in 1973 and then worked as a photojournalist until 1979 when I switched careers. The photojournalism experience helped me learn to identify opportunities for combining composition, lighting, body language and gesture for visual communication of a moment or a story. My main interest is in composing images that have both a visual and emotive impact by capturing moments where body language and gesture fit into a composition to communicate a clear moment of a story.
Early on I used Nikon equipment, and Kodachrome for color and Tri-X for black-and-white. In the early 2000’s I switched to compact digital cameras and have used several over the course of the years. I use Adobe Lightroom for electronic image processing.
Notes on Paris in B&W: In September, 2023 I attended a street photography workshop taught by Peter Turnley in Paris, France (www.peterturnley.com/workshops). I attended 2 days, contracted COVID, and sat out the rest of the week. I returned in September, 2024 for a do-over. Paris was a beautiful venue for this workshop and the Parisians I met on the street were generous with their time and candor. The photographs in this section were (almost) all taken for the workshop.
Notes on Seventies Scenes: These are photographs from the early 1970’s and from mid-1978 to mid-1979 when I worked for two now-defunct community newspapers, the Wyoming State Journal in Lander, WY and the Sun-Advocate in Price, UT.
Notes on News: These are photographs taken for the Lawrence (KA) Journal-World (1974-75) and the Santa Fe (NM) New Mexican (1975-77).
